Beyond Boudoir Photography

Break the Bias

Today is International Women’s Day.

Maybe not the day you’re reading this. And certainly not the day I’m writing this (which is the day before, March 7, 2022, for all you future historians).

But I’d like to, once again, pitch my support behind the cause of equality for women.

Indeed, equality for all, but today, let’s focus on half the population.

I am not a women. I know that might come as a surprise to some, because boudoir photography is something that many women have excelled in.

Indeed, I could celebrate some of my favourite female photographers here, who are doing important work in creating a culture around body positivity. People like Teri Hofford out of Winnipeg, who is redefining how women relate to their own bodies, and reframing what is considered beautiful.

So today, I wanted to share a few links, to give space to some voices you might not have heard before. To help amplify the message of #breakthebias, to whatever small degree I can. To link to some stories, videos, images and think pieces on the topic. Expect this to evolve throughout the day.

Lean In

On this day set aside to celebrate women, to advocate for women, and to advance women’s rights and celebrate the social, political and economic achievements of women, know that these things are important: equality, equity, fairness, justice. For thousands of years, women have been abused, ignored, disrespected and treated as second class citizens. And that has been to the detriment of society; when everyone is allowed to succeed, when everyone is allowed to participate in the betterment of society, society itself becomes better. But it’s hard, because those attitudes and approaches that have been ingrained in our culture still exist. So for 2022, let’s work to #breakthebias.
